Dog Calming Tips to Stop Digging

calmdog diggingA dog digging up the backyard is not likely an indication of a calm dog.  In fact, a dog that frequently digs is the opposite of a calm dog, and usually signs of a nervous, bored, or hyper dog.
 
There are a couple of dog calming tips to help soothe your dog and hopefully spare your backyard the devastation of too much digging.  In an attempt to get your dog to stop digging up the yard, you should see to it that he has plenty of daily exercise and dog appropriate toys to play with for entertainment.

It is important to address stop your dog from digging and to take actions to calm your dog, as boredom and excess build up of energy can lead not only to a more hyper dog, but also to more property damage and greater destruction beyond a holes in the lawn. 

Exercising your dog daily will give provide an outlet to release pent up energy rather than wearing himself out digging along the fence line.  Try walking your dog twice a day, and in addition teaching him to play a good game of daily fetch.

Giving your dog special toys for him to play with is another good dog calming method.  Your dog may be easily entertained with a few chew toys, stuffed animals, or even a bone or two.  Toys will give your dog something to do while he is outside and divert his attention from the digging.

Climate control is also a good way of calming dogs and preventing too much digging in the backyard.  Often, during extreme temperatures, dogs will dig up a hole to either cool off in or to protect against winds cold conditions. 

If your dog is digging up the backyard during extreme hot temperatures, you may want to provide him with a kiddie pool filled with water and even a fan if he stays on the porch.  During the winter, providing a warm bed and blankets in the backyard may also help alleviate the digging during the short times he spends out in the elements.

Overall, the best dog calming technique to stop your dog from digging up your yard is to keep him busy and tired.  Good old fashion fresh air and exercise has the same effect on dogs and owners, a nice long quiet nap to finish a great time.
